There Are Many Sides To Steve Hackett

Walking out on stage, and taking a seat with just two acoustic guitars at his side, Steve Hackett held up his hands and commented, "This is it, 10 fingers." And those fingers created a magical evening of music.

Playing the first set solo, Hackett mesmerized the crowd with 45 minutes of astounding musicianship and entertaining stories. On his own, he played his signature piece from the Genesis years "Horizons," and fans of his solo works were treated songs spanning his entire career from 1975's Voyage Of The Acolyte ("Ace Of Wands" and "Hands Of The Priestess II"), to pieces from his most recent acoustic release Metamorpheus. Pieces such as "Kim" and "Second Chance" were featured from his first classical release Bay Of Kings. Segments of Genesis classics like "Firth Of Fifth" and "Hairless Heart" among others found their way into the arrangements.

The second half of the show clocked in around 90 minutes, featuring his brother John on flute, and keyboardist Roger King. The evening had many highlights, but the trio nailed a rendition of "After The Ordeal" from Selling England By The Pound to the delight of the crowd that numbered close to 300 (according to the local papers review). "Bacchus" also featured some dazzling musicianship from the group. A few pieces from the composer Satie, not a surprise as the Hackett brothers recorded an album's worth of his music a few years back. King and brother John were also allowed the spotlight, each playing an original composition.

Hackett was also impressed with Troy Savings Bank Music Hall, commenting on the acoustics, and the live feel of the room. It was like having Steve Hackett in your living room, a very intimate setting, perfect for Hackett's haunting melodies and arrangements. Hackett proved that his not just a rock guitarist, but a musician/composer with many sides to his musical personality. This is a tour that should not be missed, and one I will remember as a most special night.
