Other: The Enid Celebrates Xymphonia's Anniversary

Posted on Saturday, April 21 @ 23:00:00 UTC by nightowl

The Dutch radio show Xymphonia celebrates the milestone of 1000 editions on Sunday June 17, 2012. Running for twenty years, this weekly radio show, broadcast on local public radio station Omroep Almelo, has become one of the consistent elements within the progressive rock scene. Not keen to let this milestone pass unacknowledged, the team behind the show have secured an exclusive gig this summer by the legendary British band The Enid who will be giving a concert that evening in Theater Hof 88 in Almelo. A splendid opportunity to see this wonderfull band in a small, 160 seats, theatre for free.

The Enid was founded in the early seventies by pianist / composer Robert John Godfrey, whom after 40 years still can be regarded as their bandleader. The Enid’s sound succesfully combines the dynamics of classical symphonic music with rock and has been described as "Edward Elgar meets Pink Floyd meets the Berlin Philharmonic."

The Enid has been very succesful in the seventies with albums like In The Region Of The Summer Stars and Aerie Faerie Nonsense, but since then has been able to regularly renew themselves, finding new avenues within their music. They steadfastedly charted their own course and after a long tough period in the nineties has rejunevated themselves by adding a new generation of musicians to the band. This resulted in a splendid amalgam of modern sounds and the classic Enid sound of which their most recent studio album Journey's End is the first result.

The weekly Xymphonia radio show is one of the longest running programs on Omroep Almelo. Every Sunday evening, between 20:00 and 22:00 hours, this two hour show presents progressive, melodic and symphonic rock in all of its many guises. The five men strong editorial staff intentionally also looks beyond the perceived boundaries of the genre to see what other great music can be found there but surely doesn’t lose sight of the all time classics. As such not only upcoming new bands (like Moon Safari, Knight Area, Mangrove etc.) can be heard but also the bigger bands many of our listeners hold close to their hearts (think Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis, Marillion, Flower Kings, Spock’s Beard, Porcupine Tree etc.). Besides being broadcast live on radio the Xymphonia show can also be enjoyed worldwide through an On Demand Stream through the “Uitzending Gemist” link on the radio station's dedicated Xymphonia page: www.omroepalmelo.nl/xymphonia
