CD/DVD Releases: New Iona Live Album In 2013

"Incredibly it is almost 8 years since the Iona Live in London DVD was recorded (with the double CD version released sometime later)," write Iona in their November newsletter. "For the past couple of years, the band have been keen to record another live album to try to capture something of the current excitement generated during the live set and in particular capture some of the Another Realm songs live. It's often difficult to predict in advance which gig or gigs are likely to make for a great live album. There are so many variables on any given night - venue acoustics, crowd reaction, technical issues, tiredness, unfamiliar equipment (if the gig is abroad) etc, etc., which can influence how the gig will go. Quite often however, with their backs against the wall, these percieved negatives can often spur a band on to throw caution to the wind and play out of their skins.

With these thoughts in mind, the four October gigs in England (Leeds, Kendal, Liverpool and Bilston) were recorded onto a 24 track hard disk recorder by our UK sound engineer Gareth with the aim to use the best tracks to produce a new live album. Dave has now loaded these up into his computer and, in any free time is listening through to the tracks and choosing the best takes to get ready for them to be mixed. 'There is some good stuff on there and definitely enough for a good live album,' he says. We'll keep you posted on progress. At this stage the plan is to release it first as a download and as a CD (possibly a double!) later. In the meantime here are some great photos from one of the gigs that was recorded - at The Robin 2 in Bilston in October. Special thanks to Phil Beevers for these.

Iona DVD For 2013?

"Recently we received a hard disk with film of the band's one off gig in the splendid Nokia Theatre in Tallinn at the end of July. The concert was filmed using 3 or 4 cameras and we now have the footage from each camera. We're hoping to release this as a live concert DVD along with a second DVD featuring some of the large amount of 'on the fly' footage that has been taken over the past two years - mostly by our good friends Tim Finch and Mark Rabich - at gigs and in the studio. This is still in the planning stage but we should have further news soon."
