Goddog Of Prey is Scapegoat's second album following the debut Purify which sold over 1000 copies without any marketing or management. During the years the band has been support act for a wide range of more known bands such as Rage, Sodom, and Tankard. After losing both their drummer and guitarist, and to top if off their record company, vocalist and guitarist Tosse Basler decided to re-ignite the band adding two new members in Daniel Herbert (b) and Stefan Ostermayer (d).

This is quite hard-hitting stuff, uniting thrash and true eighties heavy metal with new elements and wicked, intricate rhythms. Combined, I'd call it Power/Prog. Knowing these facts you may very well consider Scapegoat to be a progressive metal band but progressive in its very own way. The music is mysteriously dark and the sound is implacable and true. Combining crushing guitar riffs and stunning drum work with strong melodic vocal lines, the mix is quite irresistible. Fortunately the band has given room for variation in both pace and mood. Scapegoat has managed to come up with a fairly unique and charismatic sound and come off as one of the most original bands I have had the pleasure of being introduced to lately.

Of the 10 songs offered, I'd say 6 of them are very strong, 2 are average, the final 2 lack good melody-lines, which project the band as messy and uninteresting. The production by the band and Gerhard Magin (Crematory, Theatre of Tragedy, Mystik Circle) is strong and powerful and should be credited.

Fans of prog, power, and pure metal will certainly find a lot to enjoy on this album and with a few more strong songs this would have made a killer CD.
