The years are passing by, the thunderous voice from his glory days is becoming rawer and rawer ? yet the crystalline talent of a musician like Steve Walsh remains untainted, an eternal messenger of timeless melodies, which still result much more modernized than the vast majority of today's music acts. In fact Steve looks like a stranger to the retirement fund while he unveils Shadowman, the ideal sequel of the masterpiece Glossolalia. And it's really no coincidence that the opening track "Rise" recalls the beginning of the previous work, balancing itself between a heavy guitar riff and some excellent modern sounds. But Steve loves to mix it up with different and particular alchemies, so it's no mystery that the afore-mentioned opening track ends with a symphonic counterpart written by the marvellous Michael Romeo (of Symphony X). However the SX guitarist makes more than a brief appearance, as he enriches with classical touches the beautiful "After" (which features the return of another ex-Kansas virtuoso, David Ragsdale) and "Hell Is Full Of Heroes," too. Still the emotional pinnacle of the album is represented with the moody "Pages Of Old," where the performance of the great singer is sustained only by a swift acoustic guitar (even if there are orchestral counterparts in some places). A voice and a guitar ? it's as simple as that, but it's more than enough to give us the same, unforgettable chills down the spine!
