When I listened to the Edgar Winter CD Live At The Galaxy I was quite pleased with what I heard, then I watched and listened more intently to the DVD. This is the first DVD I have ever viewed of Edgar Winter performing. I fondly remember him from his outstanding '70s output with the albums They Only Come Out At Night and Shock Treatment. Although I realize he has been performing actively for many years this is my own personal recollection of his music.

Not to coin a phrase, pun, or to be cruel, but I think Edgar is in the Winter of his career in regards to popularity. Regardless, his voice remains strong and his abilities spot on. The natural wear and tear after decades of touring and recording has been kind to his vocal cords. He always sang from his toes heartily and at times screamed, so it comes as a surprise that he has held up so well. The backing band he has is terrific and he still can play the keyboards and saxophone with plenty of vitality and skill. His classics "Frankenstein" and "Tobacco Road" are the proof of his strong constitution on stage and ability to turn on the audience with blues soaked rockin' boogie, he has not lost a step with his energetic live performances.

Doug Rappaport is no Rick Derringer or Johnny Winter but he is no slouch either, he holds his own and keeps the audience pumped with some six-string pyrotechnics of his own. Chris Frazier (drums) and Mark Meadows (bass) are a strong and in-step rhythm section that keeps Mr. Winter in a steady groove all night. Edgar even plays the drums during "Frankenstein," doing a give and take with Frazier, much to the crowd's delight (and mine). On "Tobacco Road" Winter scats (just like Ella Fitzgerald) and Rappaport answers him with his guitar, it's a lot of fun to watch. Another highlight of the show is "New Orleans," Edgar's tribute to Dr. John. It's a real Mardi Gras complete with a full horn section and balloons dropping from the ceiling, what a rock 'n' roll party!

If you already picked up the CD, you really should check out the DVD, it makes it all hit home, plus you get all the bonuses like an in-depth interview with Edgar, backstage footage and rehearsals, all the cool and personal up close stuff you cannot get into on a CD.
