Entre El Sueno U La Vigilia is the debut of Blue Universe aka Sebastian Woscoboinik, who hails from Argentina. Utilizing the Chapman Stick and synthesizers as his instruments of choice, Woscoboinik has crafted a series of compositions that are most properly described as soundscapes rather than songs (with one notable exception). The music found on Entre El Sueno U La Vigilia is surreal and dreamy, with just enough dynamics to keep me from calling it ambient. That said, there is plenty of space and gentle repetition to please any ambient lover.

Woscoboinik's decision to utilize the Chapman Stick to create atmospheric backgrounds is a bit disappointing because his playing hints at a potential to generate genuine melodic drive. There are a few moments on Entre El Sueno U La Vigilia when Woscoboinik breaks out of the album's dreamy quality and actually rocks a bit, such as the pounding Stick breaks heard in "Matrix" (which also includes dialogue from the movie) and a nice Stick-guitar duo in "Solo Cenizas". Also, on the unnumbered closing track, Woscoboinik surprises the listener by demonstrating his piano talents on a live recording of the introduction from "Firth of Fifth".

The only real song to be found on Entre El Sueno U La Vigilia is the Beatles' "Across the Universe" which gets an unusual - some would say "unpleasant" - reworking and features child-like lead vocals courtesy of Sumaia Daher.

The production is super: the quality of the recording and mixing allows all instruments to be clearly heard, giving the sound of 3-dimensional depth that is occasionally breath-taking, especially in headphones. And the package itself is quite unique: in lieu of the usual booklet, a gorgeous set of cards is used for the accompanying liner notes and photographic images - very nice!

For those listeners who enjoy new age, ambient, and space music, Entre El Sueno U La Vigilia should fit nicely into your cd rotation. Perfect for meditation, yoga, or just relaxing at the end of a stressful day.
