For those of you who still have to overcome the split of Änglägard; for those of you for whom Sinkadus have not yet redeemed [themselves and met] the expectations; and whilst waiting for the new White Willow album there is a new Skandinavian gift that introduces itself as Valinor's Tree. On their debut Kingdom Of Sadness, the loyal ingredients are used in order to support the most powerful melodies I have heard in years. Opener and title track "Kingdom Of Sadness" changes the dreamy with hard edged guitars and playful rhythm changes so as to be close on Anekdoten's heels. The guitar's distortion gives way to some more mystique during "Cold" before a lyrical Moog opens the way to accessibility. In "Memories" one can find many a rock cliché but the final track "Deep" certainly includes the most characteristic elements. Especially the contrast between heavy metal guitars and acoustic piano, between a wall of violence and the calm of wide, extensive, unpolluted woods, between the nervous uncontrolled and the naive simplicity really tells many a story. Valinor's Tree is a 'mid-summer night's dream' of a band - get this natural phenomenon inside!
