RITES OF SPRING FESTIVAL 2005, COLONIAL THEATRE, PHOENIXVILLE, PA, APRIL 29 - MAY 1, 2005 | |
Eyestrings opened Day One of ROSfest 2005. Here is guitarist Alan Rutter. Ryan Parmenter and Matthew Kennedy On the drums, Bob Young Kino was added to the bill when Mostly Autumn had to back out (Tiles and Magenta each moving up a spot in the order). Here we see John Beck (It Bites) playing for this supergroup that includes... Bassist Pete Trewavas (Marillion, Transatlantic) Vocalist/guitarist John Mitchell (Arena, The Urbane) ... and unseen here, Bob Dalton (It Bites; filling in for Chris Maitland) With this and next two (like the Mitchell pics w/Arena) I was taken with the lighting, and snapped several at varying zoom rates... Though perhaps not so visible at this size, it does appear that Beck is looking at the heavens... and the lighting just unscores that impression (he was looking up; however, I don't think it was meant to be "significant." Yes, this and the one above are pretty much the same; me playing with "continuous mode"... The classic "rock star" pose... to bad the shot isn't of the "money shot" quality. Despite appearances, Mitchell was not giving the audience the finger. Nor was he um... you know, during this somber moment singing "Picture." (and I included not for that reason, but because it almost looks like a composite shot (more so before I adjusted levels) "I believe I can fly..." Up next was Tiles, and this series of shots leads off with bassist Jeff Whittle Vocalist Paul Rarick (and behind the symbol at the right, drummer Pat DeLeon) Okay, fairly good shot of the drums; DeLeon is a blur, but then the way he was playing the drums, he really was a blur. Looks like a badly framed shot... however, the irony is that I was at the time focusing on Whittle, thus Rarick is half out of frame... and came out clearly, Whittle not even a little. After being introduced by Annie Haslem, Magenta took the stage. Above, keyboardist and brain-trust of Magenta Rob Reed and bassist Matthew Cohen. Poorly shot, but it does illustrate the energy Magenta put into their set; though most bands seemed to be having a good time, Magenta really, really showed it (Tangent the next day as well). A captured moment during an acoustic vocal/guitar piece - but uh, because the camera didn't see it as clearly as I did, this I ran through Photoshop and some filters (added a white layer and lowered opacity, used the angled strokes filter (oh, and a gradient border))... Duncan Glenday captured this moment much better than I, however. And though it looks like filters have been applied to give it a "painterly" look... none have. You'll see I took a lot of "long shots" with Magenta... and some of them follow. :-) Wasn't able to capture the "bunny moment," however... < < Back to Gallery | Return to Day Zero - Pre-Show | On to Day Two > > © 2005 Stephanie Sollow, Duncan N Glenday © Copyright 1999, 2005 Progressive World Photographs © Stephanie Sollow, Duncan N Glenday |
