L.A. Jenkins, Randy McKean's Bristle, Cory Wright, Aurora Josephson, T.D. Skatchit, Jim Ryan's Forward Energy

The following releases are now available from Edgetone:

L.A. Jenkins - Clarity Of The Peculiar: The music of Clarity Of The Peculiar is the exploration and the cacophony of extended sounds, the noted reference to song form and familiar compositional structure of LA Jenkins and his collective project Stop By Fear. With the collaboration of Martin Rippel - trumpet, flugelhorn, handheld percussion; Anthony Jacobs - flute, trombone, alien wind instrument, handheld percussion; and LA Jenkins on guitar, this assembly of progressive modern jazz performers embarks on an adventurous musical journey of electro-acoustic improvisations. The collective ensemble employment of ambient, experimental and avant-garde constructs yields an effort that results in the collective's effort to showcase their love of jazz and free music.

- Avant-garde/Jazz.

The Green Mitchell Trio - The Green Mitchell Trio: Reeds player Cory Wright assembled the Bay Area based Green Mitchell Trio with bassist Lisa Mezzacappa and drummer Jason Levis in order to realize a growing collection of music he has been writing for this instrumental configuration. The group is a kinetic, versatile unit that can climb through compositional complexities, swing from the outer limbs of jazz, and plummet into the groundlessness of spontaneous soundspace... and the possibility of hopping on a passing groove is never out of the question. Recent iterations of Green Mitchell have included John Schott on guitar and Sam Ospovat on drums.

Bristle - Bulletproof: Bristle crams modern jazz, chamber music and garage rock into the same clown car and hits the road running. Bulletproof's tracks range from the lead-off "Notlob," inspired by John Zorn's cut-up method and titled after Monty Python's Dead Parrot sketch, to the Art Ensemble-ish atmospherics of "Attica." While the band offers fresh innovation with the graphic score "Budmo Jiggler," they also interpret 1960's legend and Ornette Coleman contemporary Lemuel Crook's freebop classic "Revolution." McKean's riff-based, quasi-talk show theme "Settlin'inin'" contrasts with Wright's contrapuntal, compartmental vehicle "Boxcar Bob." "Drizzle" mixes light showers with heavy solos from clarinetist Wright and company. Bristle christened their debut CD Bulletproof in joking tribute to themselves for surviving the intricate complexities of McKean and Wright's compositions. Feeling it was also an apt description for Campbell's seemingly indestructible young niece, whose fearless jamming on the toy accordion with the band during a practice session inspired the tune "Wheezy Breezy," the group chose her as the album's cover girl. Bristle hopes its listeners feel similarly invincible after experiencing Bulletproof.

- Avant-garde/Jazz.

Aurora Josephson, T.D. Skatchit & Company - Skatchbox Blues: Skatchbox Blues is a tribute to Tom Nunn (aka Thomas Skatchit) and his musical invention - The Skatchbox. The song celebrates the low budget joy of making and playing your own instrument. The skatchbox is made from a cardboard box (usually a computer keyboard box) with various objects glued to its surface. Specially shaped combs are used to play it and contact microphones are attached to the inside of the box amplifying its "magical sounds such as the wind rustling through the trees, croaking frogs, stinging bees." Skatchbox Blues was written and produced by David Michalak, the D. in the skatchbox duo, T.D. Skatchit and features the incredible voice of Aurora Josephson and soulful guitar of Michael Knowlton. The CD also includes "The Runaround" and "Nurse Skatchit" which embrace the wondrous sounds of the Skatchbox with pianist Thollem McDonas. "Treasure's in the trash" - Thomas Skatchit.

- Satire/Blues/Avant-Garde.

T.D. Skatchit and Company - Skatchbox Surveillance: "Thomas Skatchit continued to design and construct new skatchboxes while his cousin David mixed the various waveforms that had been recorded. The Skatchits had been seen at concert halls, bar rooms and dives, listening to and making note of the growing potential of Skatch." And so continues the mythology of T.D. Skatchit & Company - Tom Nunn and David Michalak playing skatchboxes in trios with various Bay Area improvisers. "A secret Society of Skatch was formed to celebrate the wondrous sounds of the Skatchbox. Covert arrangements were made to meet and record the new skatch music you hear on this recording!" Skatch Surveillance, their 3rd release, celebrates the ongoing development of skatchbox techniques pioneered by Tom and David and is an exploration of the varied influences guest musicians bring to the music of Skatch. The 16 tracks include - "We Do Know," "Detective Skatchit," "Skatch Surveillance," "Your Brain On Skatch" and others. Guest musicians include: Aurora Josephson, Chris Brown, Jonathan Segel, Karen Stackpole and others. "Skatch Surveillance is a seasoned expression of a unique instrument -- the Skatchbox." Walter Ruffman, S.F. Monical.

- Avant-garde/Jazz.

Jim Ryan's Forward Energy - The Awakening: The current formation of Forward represented on The Awakening has played monthly throughout 2011 in various venues. It includes founder Jim Ryan (who played on Steve Lacy's weekly jam sessions in Paris during the early 70s) on flute, saxes, and trumpet, and original member Scott R. Looney on piano. Scott received his BA in music from Coe College, Iowa and an MFA from Cal Arts. He has been a pillar of the experimental music community since the late 90s. The group also includes Rent Romus on alto, soprano, and c-melody saxophones. He studied with Stan Getz and is a power both on his horn and as an organizer and promoter of the Bay Area experimental music community. Eric Marshall is a regular bassist with Eddie Gale's groups and he works in all genres of the jazz idiom. Percussionist Timothy Orr studied with Ed Blackwell and plays all styles from zydeco to free jazz.
