Project Creation - Dawn On Pyther
Year of Release: 2007
Label: ProgRock Records
Catalog Number: PRR321
Format: CD
Total Time: 76:13:00Project Creation is the project of Hugo Flores, a very talented musician from Portugal. In 2003 he released the album Playing The Universe under the moniker Sonic Pulsar. Although a good debut album, it needed work. Flores worked on it and the second release turned out a lot better. But Flores was an ambitious man with lots of ideas and some of these ideas did not fit into Sonic Pulsar.
So he started a project unique for the Portugese music scene: Project Creation. Yes, you could easily draw the comparison to Ayreon ... so, that is out of the way. Project Creation was a large scale musical and lyrical concept that would not fit just one album. So after the excellent Floating World, in 2007 Hugo Flores released the sequel, Dawn On Pyther.
I can be very brief on this album: Fantastic! Well, that was one short review... OK, ok, I'll say a bit more...
Dawn On Pyther continues where Floating World ended: The beings introduced on Floating World have found a new home, Pyther and several species are living together is peace and harmony. But one of these creatures, The Dragonfly, decides to move on and explore new things. But she stays in contact with Pyther.
Next to the continuation of the theme and story, we also see most musicians and singers reappearing on the sequel. But Flores has a new leading lady: Zara Quiroga. And what a voice she has!
When I play the albums after each other, I do feel Project Creation has grown and moved forward, as the sound of the second album impresses me even more. I did enjoy the Floating World a lot, but Dawn On Pyther takes it to the next level. Powerful melodies balance on the line between prog rock and metal apparently with great ease, but never taking it too far. Flores is an excellent guitarist and I love his crunchy riffs. Also the keyboards sound so delicious ... give me more! The choice of vocalists is very good. They all are a delight to listen to.
Despite the album lasting about 76 minutes, it never gets boring and never do I lose attention to the story. And when you listen to the album with headphones, it gets even better, as you hear what a great mixer/producer Flores is in creating such a beautiful work of art. These are musicians we need to cherish.
As Dawn On Pyther is a concept album, I am not going to pick out favourite songs. I haven't found a weak moment or a weak song. Honestly said, Dawn On Pyther is a magnificent album that will steal the hearts of anyone who loves music. Add to that the beautiful artwork and you have yourself a CD that is more than worth having. This is a CD that will not gather dust in your cabinet, but will quite often frequent your CD player.
So please, do not download (unless it is legal, like at www.mindawn.com) this album, but support this beautiful work of art and thus ensure we can see the end of this story. If the line goes as it has been going since 2003, I have high expectations for the next chapter in this story.
