Obskuria - Discovery Of Obskuria
Year of Release: 2007
Label: Trip In Time/World In Sound
Catalog Number: WIS-2003
Format: CD
Total Time: 00:00:00Another space rock entity based in Peru, also on the Trip In Time label is Obskuria. This massive psychedelic blowout (clocking at nearly 80 minutes), is different from their label compatriots, Serpentina Satelite, because of the heavy use of Hammond Organ.
Virtually every moment of the CD has swirling organ sounds layering the songs with only occasional synth blips that one finds on other space rock albums. Keyboardist Winnie Rimbach-Sator gravitates between an angressive Deep Purple approach and the more atmospheric, subdued stylings of Rick Wright. As a result, one never knows whether you?re listening to a space-rock band or a hard rock band from the seventies.
Obskuria is made up of a bunch of musicians from bands spanning three continents and three generations. Most notable is guitarist Tom Brehm of the 60s USA band Dragonwyck.
The band do a couple of interesting cover songs which barely resemble the originals; providing their own signature sound with confidence and precision. The best material is the original stuff, starting with the high driving punkish opening track "I Am My Own God." A very good cover of Metallica?s "For Whom The Bell Tolls" follows and pounds the stake into the ground, firmly establishing what this band is all about. With long, energetic instrumentals, the band soars into the Cosmos with the outward thrust of heavy, yet precision-driven jams.
"Forbidden Look" and the 19 minute "Essence Of Its Own" are also excellent, constantly evolving and changing.
"Turn Your Face" shows the band?s versatility by adding blues rock to the mix. The vocals are particularly strong on this track.
The 12 minute title track continues the journey with a massive dose of energy, followed by another punkish number, "Die Die My Darling." The bonus track, a 40 year old jazz/R&B number closes a long, exhausting yet exhilarating listen.
This album is almost too difficult to describe, but it is clear from repeated listenings that Obskuria may be one of the most unique bands in the Space-Rock psyche fold and they are definitely worth checking out.
