Rick Wakeman Special Issue Of "Mellotron"
by John "Bobo" Bollenberg

Rick Wakeman

Rick Wakeman Special Issue of Mellotron As soon as Mellotron editor Andres Valle knew Rick Wakeman would be coming over to South-America in September 2000, he started toying with the idea of releasing a special editon of his fine magazine to coincide with Rick's visit. Being a huge Wakeman fan himself obviously, he already had plenty of rare Wakeman memorabilia, not to mention Rick's entire output whether it was solo, with The Strawbs, Yes, or with Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman & Howe.

Just in time to coincide with the tour, the Rick Wakeman Special was ready and every fan of the keyboard wizard should have had a copy. Even if it's written in Spanish, everyone should buy a copy because the layout is once again superb, containing rare photographs, vintage cuttings and an accurate and complete discography depicting every album Rick has released so far. From the early days of Six Wives of Henry VIII down to his recent Preludes To A Century, everything is included! From the result you can clearly see that this is a labour of love.

When Andres presented Rick with a finished copy of this edition, he told Andres it was the nicest publication ever to be released. The edition holds information which was never before revealed, such as stories about the Over the Top Club, his connection with gangster Maurce O'Mahoney and even includes some "almost nude" photographs of Dan Wooding, writer of Rick's biography The Caped Crusader. The fact is that, after the launch of the book, Rick and friends went to a pub in the centre of London. Knowing how ticklish Wooding is, Wakeman started to tickle him, which meant Wooding lost all power and Rick started taking Dan's clothes off in the middle of the street! It sounds unbelievable but I was there and took some photographs which for the first time ever have now been published in this Rick Wakeman Mellotron Special. There was one picture though which showed Dan completely naked! That photo was returned to Dan together with the negatives because, knowing Rick, he might have made these into giant 20 m2 posters!
